Unhappily the teaching techniques used in them seldom realise the full potential of these valuable teaching aids. The linguistic analyses on which many courses are based rely a good deal on unsatisfactory comparisons with Latin and Greek and are, in any case, over-influenced by the written rather than the spoken language. Mr Bennett bases his approach firmly on the spoken language and describes the transformational generative grammar and scale and category grammar which form the basis of modern methods. He then goes on to show how these principles can be applied in teaching.
